Hi Folks,

I'm planning on building a linux box that will be on 24/7, I'd like to be able to control it remotely (desktop control aswell as terminal etc.) from my Vista laptop.

I know of VNC (can that be installed on Linux?) but can you have it so that the server service starts up on boot instead of when you login? This is so that I can have the linux box sitting on the logon screen at home, and then when I want to access it from work for instance I can just connect and logon and take control of the desktop.

What do I need in order to do this?

Thanks,
Paul

Give FreeNX a try. I know its faster than VNC and when I used it it never required a logon to be active, you just set the daemon to execute on boot and you're done.

Good guide to freenx, technical install/config stuff is about half way through.

You could also use SSH XForwarding, lots of tutorials around on how to configure that.

Another vote for FreeNX, works a treat for me, allows me to access an Ubuntu rig remotely from both Windows XP and OSX. :)

My top tip would be to make sure you've got the users set up properly.
