If I am running a laptop in clam-shell mode attached by HDMI to the TV, how do I control it when the TV is off and I want to stream audio?

If I use remote desktop the audio ends up on the laptop on my knee. Can that be reconfigured?

Any other ways?

I have working W7 laptop with iffy screen and keyboard - it would drive my telly with iPlayer content very nicely, and with a USB to my DAC would act as an audio streamer too.

Open the RDC connection window.
Click on "Options"
Go to "Local Resources"
Under "Remote Audio" click on "Settings"
Select "Play on remote computer".

Real VNC?

I'm not quite sure what you're asking here? Can you just clarify what it is you're after?

If you tv is off, it's not possible to use the audio as obviously the tv has to be on for it to work.

Why bother using RDP in the first place for streaming media.

Map a drive, and get the resources that way. MUCH better.

In Cyprus my access to UK domestic TV is by using iPlayer and iPlayer Desktop connecting by VPN.

Presently I just connect the laptop on the table in front of the sofa by long HDMI to the TV. The optical out of the TV is connected to my DAC which drives a power amp and very good speakers. For radio and ripped CDs I use a Squeezebox connected to the DAC with the Squeezebox Server on the laptop.

I have a new laptop. The old one I could place under the TV, connect by short HDMI to the TV and by USB to the DAC. That could render the Squeezebox redundant.

The old laptop will do all the media work and the new laptop I can move around the house with. How to I use the new laptop to control the old connected to the TV, while ensuring that video and audio output is delivers to the TV and the DAC? When streaming radio or CDs ripped in FLAC the TV should be off.

That would work, and I could run a software instance of Squeezebox on the old laptop. That software Squeezebox I can control via a web interface on the new laptop.

Ta.

Must explore.

But first I must get the old laptop to find its HDMI port - a new installation of W7 seems to have gone in and ignored it.

Don't you love M$?

The HDMI was fine till I did the virgin install. The sreen works but has two vertical lines. Keyboard is clogged with dust and has a keytop missing. I do believe the guts of the old laptop are fine.

Linux Mint goes in and picks up everything.
