Hi all,
I'm experiencing difficulties in remotely connecting to my father's computer via the internet. Let me give you our setup first.
1. I'm running vista 64 bit with sp1. I have a netgear dg834g with the latest firmware. I'm not running WIndows firewall.
2. Dad has XP pro 32bit sp3 with a standard adsl modem delivered with talk talk. There is no firewall with his modem but he has XP's own firewall running.

3. On both machines our login accounts are password protected and on both machines allow remote desktop connection is enabled. Also, in the fiirewall settings on both machines (even though it's off for me) the remote desktop connection is allowed as an exception.

In my remote desktop connection login area in the computer name I write his IP address and in the user name I write the login name he uses to log onto his account. I cannot connect, some error message or other is displayed. In one tutorial I read it said something about ensuring certain services were running but can anyone else give me any advice about how to successfully connect to my father's PC remotely via the internet?
Thanks,
Pete

Messed about with port forwarding, if I understand your advice correctly, I need to forward this port from my router settings to his computer? or have a misunderstood you?
Well, whatever I've done I got it wrong as it still didn't work. In my netgear dg834g v 4 router settings I created a custom service called RDP and selected the type as tcp/udp (not knowing the difference) and the start and finish port as 3389. I then went to the firewall rules section and in outbound services section selected the above custom service and set it to allow always. In the LAn users bit I chose the LAN Ip addresses of my three machines 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.3 and in the WAN section I entered his computers IP address which incidentally is dynamic not static i.e. it changes each time he connects to the net ( if my understanding is correct?) Then I tried to connect to his PC and still failed.
From what quackers says above I have to change something in his modem settings also?

You know I've always considered myself reasonably pc literate, can build a computer but when it comes to networking etc I'm lost.

Swinne, I like the sound of logmein free edition. I'll google it now.

In the meantime, I'm keen to learn, so if anyone can add any helpful pointers as to where I'm going badly wrong, I'm all ears.

Port 3389 needs forwarding on your Fathers setup, not yours. If the Talk Talk modem is also a router then it will most like be where the setting(s) need to be done. Nothing should need to be done at your end apart from connecting to his machine using the Remote Desktop interface.

ns400r, thanks, that hadn't been made clear earlier.

Andy, we'd tried that previously, don't know why it wouldn't work.

Appreciate your replies.

if you're having trouble, just use logmein, your dad can see what you do onscreen them, simple to use too
