Weird problem both myself and my mate have been having recently with remotely connecting to our Vista PCs.

It seems that Remote Desktop no longer works and it seems to be due to an update that's occured over the last month or so.

Basically, manual configuration wise, nothing has changed on our PCs yet when we try to connect we're getting "can't connect to the remote computer" errors. This was previously working. Found out that if we turn off Windows firewall then it works again. Thing is Remote Desktop is definitley on the allow list and Remote Desktop is definitley turned on and set to accept connections

I can only put it down to a Windows update changing something as I genuinley haven't changed any other settings.

Any one have any ideas?

Is that the only firewall you're using? If it's already on the exceptions list i'd remove it then readd it again. This will make sure that it's using the correct port incase you changed it.

Definitley the only firewall. I've already re-added it as an application as well the port and it's still not working

hmmm very odd, yet it works with no firewall enabled?

Did you disable it on the machine you were connecting to or the one you were connecting from?

Yup, sorry I should have put all this in the OP, I've checked and the account I'm logging in under is definitley on the allow list.

firewall exceptions :)

are the ports forwarded in the router..?

might be easier just to install hamachi

hamachi isn't an option, besides I want to fix this rather than work around it.

Remote desktop is on the exceptions list, I even manually added port 3389. Is there something else I should be putting on there?

edit:

thanks for the help btw

You could try port scanning one machine from another on your LAN, just to see if any listeners are open.

Something like LanSpy or AngryIP Scanner would do the trick.

IP.

As I say this has all worked previously.

I'm going to try port scanning with Shields Up when I get in from work.
