Hi I use remote desktop to control one of the PCs in my house. The whole network is wireless, with a Linksys WRT54G router.
All 3 other PCs, apart from the remote one, manage to have an IP address automatically assigned to them. The remote PC has to have an IP address assigned manually as it ends up with limited connectivity otherwise. So I have assigned the remote PC an unused IP address. However, connecting remotely not has a strange issue.
The remote PC is 192.168.1.5. When I try to connect to it, my PC reports that it cannot do so. Then I went to the remote PC and pinged my PC (192.168.1.4). After doing this, I was able to connect perfectly through remote desktop connection. After doing what I had to do, I closed it down.
However, next time I came to connect remotely, I have exactly the same issue, and again I had to ping my PC from the remote PC before I could connect to it! This clearly isn't much good at all as it basically means the remote PC is no longer remote.
Does anyone know what is going on? Why does the remote connection fail until I have utilised the ping command? How can I fix this?
