Hey guys,

Is it possible to connect to another computer on your LAN with Remote Desktop Connection in Windows XP Pro?

I’d like to get a server up and running somewhere else in the house with no monitor etc, and connect to it remotely and manage it through my own machine?

Could someone put some tutorials/links my way etc?

Cheers ;)

it is possible but seemed too much hastle so i just downloaded RealVNC which is better anyway and is nice and easy to use

um... yes.

right click on my computer > properties > remote > enable.

in the registry go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server

change fDenyTSConnections to 0

then connect from other pc via start>programs>accesories>connection>remote desktop.

Are you kidding? remote desktop is simple to setup and is better than any flavour of vnc i've tried. SImply enable remote desktop in the control pannel, make sure you account has a password and you're away

Sp00n, I tried what you suggested and the value was already set to 0 on the client machine?

Then I go to Remote Desktop Connection and try looking on my network but I get 'can't find any terminal servers' error?

a) does the pc you're trying to connect to have a firewall on?
b) try connecting to the <ip>:3389 of the server machine.

Firewalls are both down and the IP connection thing didn't work?

I'm still getting the error too? Should both machines have the reg value set to 0?

What about the whole 'User' issue? What should I have in there?

Cheers,

I just did this today and it works a treat! Was able to get rid of the bulky monitor on my file/media server and just use the TV and Remote Desktop.

I did hit one problem tho....the ATi drivers are now confused because I don't have a monitor just a TV....so I don't get "theatre mode" anymore....but actually, the playback seems just the same as before....so I dunno.
