Dear All,

I have Windows Enterprise Server 2008 R2 SP1 (x64) running on a HP Proliant ML110 G6 server. I am currently using the default Administrator account with a password that I have set.

Not the problem is I can not remote desktop from my pc (running Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 x64) to the server. I get a failed logon error message.

However I can remote desktop from the server to the desktop.

Any help will be grateful, as it is now driving me mad.

Have you checked your permissions?

Start > Right Click Computer > Properties > Remote settings

Check that the local Administrator has remote access and that it's enabled (if your desktop is XP I think you'll need the lower security option to).

Sorry I total forget to say that I have tried it on both "Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure)" and "Allow connections only from computer running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication (more secure)"

Hi PR,

Please note I am using Windows 7 Enterprise x64

I've had a similar problem with WHS2011 and my Win7 PC.
Both my machines are connected to the same router and this seems to be the problem. Are your machines in the same IP range? I found I couldn't RD to my Win7 machine at home, after tearing my hair out I randomly tried from work and had no problem.

Hope this is of some help.

Thanks. That's the 1st thing I checked to make sure that they were both on

a) The same IP range
b) The same Workgroup

It is strange that the RDP from Server -> Windows 7 PC works fine. But RDP the from Windows 7 PC -> Server doesn't

Have you checked it's not being blocked by a firewall?

I had a rough check, but again I'm not 100% sure which entries should be there and which ones shouldn't be.

Could is be related to IIS, as my server currently has NO ROLES installed.

Thanks guys. I have been very busy the late couple of days. So I will be trying all the ideas tomorrow or Sunday.

Hi Guys,

I have tried all the ideas above and I am still getting "The login attempt failed".

Any other ideas ?

daft question, are you using sso on rdp client to connect or cache credentials.

I am using Remote Desktop from the start menu and I'm not using cache credentials either.

I beginning to think my Windows 7 pc is the cause of the problem and not the server.

Can you RDP into the server from itself? What about from a different machine other than your W7 PC?

I have just tried to RDP using a windows xp laptop and I get the login screen. But when I enter the password is says incorrect username or password.

I am 100% using the correct username and password. Any ideas ?

Bashy.
