My brother wants a Mac, it's been a while since I owned mine and I can't for the lift of me think if Macs have a built in remote desktop capability like windows and RDP.

He wouldn't need more than one simultaneous connection, I guess there must be third party apps like VNC?

(local subnet access, not cross interweb)

Mac has a function called "Screen Sharing" built in that you enable from System Preferences > Sharing. In effect it turns the machine that is being "shared" into a VNC listening server.

You can use another Mac to connect to it using the "Screen Sharing.app" (found in System>Library>Core Services) which is like a VNC viewer. You can also use any other VNC viewers to connect to the shared machine (from Mac, Windows, Linux etc).
So basically it has built in VNC, just with fancy Apple names :)

If you are wanting to connect to Windows PC/Servers from the Mac, then use Cord (as suggested above) or Microsoft have the Remote Desktop Client for Mac (very similar to the Windows one) for free on their site. Cord is much better if you are managing multiple Windows machines, in my opinion.

Thanks for the suggestion of Cord, so much smoother than the Microsoft RDP Client. Having some issues with it forgetting or not using stored login details after a time but hopefully I can sort it.

Edit: Couldn't resolve that so I just used the commandline to connect servers and it works each time..
