Hi all,

I am currently running a small network, just a couple of computers scattered around the house.
I'm currently using 'tight VNC' as my remote desktop programs and it's ok - but in addition to what it can offer i was looking for this;

It currently has;

File sharing
Remember several ips entered [not really important]
Passworded entry.
simple to set up [no too important]

Able to get the sounds from the client playing through my pc [server side]
A section were they can't see what im doing so i can edit setting without them watching.

Oh and it has to be free.

Any ideas?

RealVNC does.

Gives you a drop-down list of previous IPs you've connected to
Can send/receive files to and from the host/remote PC
Can use different (passworded) accounts to login with (e.g. admin or 'view only')
Can set it up so that it blanks out their screen when you're connected (when desired)
Easy to setup
Pretty sure you can re-direct the sounds, although I don't do that, so don't quote me there.

Although the free edition doesn't include all that functionality (e.g file sharing)

FYI I use the enterprise edition

Pretty sure that the free version of VNC does hardly any of what the OP is after, or if it does after 3 years or so of working with the program I've never discovered how

Ultra VNC has a lot of different options that standard real VNC doesn't and it will connect to machines that just has Real VNC installed which is a handy little feature

Surely the simple windows built in Remote Desktop is ideal for what you're wanting to do though is it not?

If you're wanting to get decent quality audio, you'll be best off using a proper streaming app (shoutcast or something) as RDP will downsample it to something god-awful (and i dont think you can change that).

lol no wondering it wasn't working at first - I was trying to set it up on Windows Home, when only XP+ has it. I now have it set up on my music machine so i can play songs into my PC :D

Seems ok, and still using tightVNC for file sharing.

Any particular reason for using a remote desktop client for file sharing?

If you're using RDP you might as well just use the standard windows file sharing?
