Me and the other half are abotu to move hosue and in the new place there's only room for one pc.

So the plan was to get her shuttle and stack it somewhere, then use a laptop we have to remote it over the network.

What would be the best software for this?

Remote desktop is good obvisouly, and it's free, but is there anything else out there that's better?

Must have sound capability too.

Not much really. Not that supports sound anyway.
Most other control apps rely on sending you compressed images of what you're looking at, a la VNC.
Remote desktop, like citrix, draws in metaframe, it sends down info of window sizes and their colours in code. It does send down the odd picture when needed but mostly it redraws based on co-ordinates which is why it's so lightweight.
MetaFrame - information about frames.

The bandwidth saving means that you can listen to your music too.
Anything shoving pictures down at you will be just too chunky to listen to music over the same shared bandwidth.
