Hi, i used to use my main computer (in sig, Vista HP x64) to remote control my laptop (windows xp pro) so i could turn on and off downloads and play music through it. Now i have installed vista 64 on the laptop and i cant seem to connect to the laptop? Is there anything i could be missing out? Settings, software, drivers etc? Any help be appreciated as dont really want to re install xp again, and quite like the function of remote desktop.

No reason why you can't. I assume you have gone to the remote tab in "System", and enabled RDP? You will also have to add an exception to windows firewall (assuming you leave that garbage turned on).

If you've installed anything less than Business or Ultimate on the laptop you're out of luck, it's not included in Home or Home Premium. There's a hack, but it only works on the 32 bit version IIRC.

Just install something like TightVNC instead.

poo! so why did it work from vista to xp? whats tightvnc? does it do the same thing?
Thanks for prompt replies

RDC (aka RDP/Terminal Services) has 2 parts.

Client: The application used to remotely take control of another machine.
Server: The application that allows a machine to be remotely controlled by another machine

All version of XP and Vista (excluding Home Basic I think) have the RDC Client, so can be used to take control of any RDC enabled machine.

Only Xp Pro, Vista Business and Vista Ultimate have the RDC Server, so only these machines can be controlled remotely by another machine.

As said before, Home Premium can be hacked to have the client installed, but afaik its 32bit only.

Hope this helps.

thank you all, that explains why i sometimes saw the notice no terminal service on the server! Will try Tightvnc.

Microsoft should really make this available to Home Premium users. If even for a small fee like £10 or something.

VNC (or any screen scaper remote desktop softwarE) on Vista is just terrible. Slow and crap. Microsoft's RDP is the only proper solution because it is not a screen scraper.

yup

i wish you'd have to buy a key from ms (and have a website login for it)

then from there you could buy features..

media player
ie
media centre
remote desktop
paint

etc
charging small ammounts for each component, with it called "windows 'core edition'" or something

that would rock

logmein free is a web based remote control software...

create a free login, download some software to the laptop, then you can connect to it from anywhere with an internet connection, will disable things like wallpaper and stuff to speed things up also.

God send piece of software! :D

This isn't true at all..

This is only true of the poor versions of VNC you've clearly used. Most (All IIRC). Are based off of our VNC Free Edition codebase, which is legacy software now.

VNC Enterprise/Personal Edition are based on a new, closed-source RFB protocol (RFB 4) and amongst other things have various capture-methods, such as the VNC Mirror Driver.

AFAIK UltraVNC tore apart and copied our Mirror Driver so their software doesn't actually do a half-bad job.

Ok so i have got a copy of ultimate 64 and put it on my laptop, however i still cant connect from my desktop, does the desktop have to have ultimate aswell?

Only ever used TightVNC. It's very slow. But sometimes there is no alternative.

No.

Disable firewall (or create an exception) and make sure remote connections are enabled.
