I'll try and make this short and to the point.

I am going traveling so have purchased a laptop. I have copied all my important documents from my home PC to my laptop and also an external harddrive.
If I suddenly realize I need a file on my home PC while I am half way across the world, what is the best software to use to remote control my home PC over the internet?

with teamviewer you could run in the problem of your home pc shutting down or not being reachable, whilst with dropbox youll always have access via the web interface (or they will be synced to your laptop already)

What router do you have?

Might be able to connect to it and send a 'magic packet' to your PC to turn it on, then use remote desktop/logmein/teamviewer/vnc to connect to it

This is the method i use, works great. I can then shutdown and bootup my home PC from anywhere when i like.

beat me to it stoner :) its free matey as stoner said. Logmein in is very good as well just add your computer to your account and you can log into your machine from any machine anywhere where as team viewer would need to be installed on the machine you are remoting from.

I use live mesh (it's free too), as I've got messenger etc installed anyways and it all just uses your 'live' login. It's basically windows remote desktop accessible over the web :)

Didn't know it could do this!

Testing now, I use Mesh on all my machines to keep a few folders sync'd

-Edit, I had never noticed the 'Remote' tab before, doesn't look like a tab at all

This is great

it got integrated with 'live' when we got the stupid messenger redesign. It had been a separate beta tool up until then which worked in the same way :)

Which one of these mentioned programs, or another one, would let me log on to browse the whole computer, load programs, settings and change stuff. e.g. Fix my parents computers when I'm in Aus?

pretty much all of them lol. I know mesh, logmein and teamviewer should be able to.
