Hi there, just wondering i have a pc attached to my router, filled wth media, downstairs. I watch things of it from my upstairs comp. Is there a way for when i have finished using that pc to turn it off using my computer from upstairs? I wondered if you could use something like virtual pc?
Thanks

yup, type that into a cmd box

what os is on the media pc? (if it's xp pro, you can easily setup remote desktop, so you can have a full desktop login for it from your main pc :))

if it doesn't have xp pro (ie xp home or windows 2000), then you can install tightvnc on there, and use the vnc viewer from your pc to control it

remote desktop is better (and included in xp pro)

One more vote for vnc. I have a pc without monitor or kb mouse etc. and that has vnc on it. Perfect for anything yuo want to do to it. Cept file transfer, for which I use ftp cause windows networking is ****

on the media pc is xp pro and on my computer is vista 64 dual booted with xp 32 but i usually use vista. How do i install remote desktop? is that just a program to download?
Thank

it's all part of windows already

on the media pc, go to control panel, system, click the 'remote' tab, and click 'enable remote desktop'

then click ok
this is the remote desktop server

----

now from the other pc (in vista or xp, doesn't matter), click start, (run/start menu) type mstsc, press enter, now type in the computername of the media pc

then it'll ask for username and password (usually 'administrator' followed by the password for the media pc)

then it'll log on

if you're not just using windows firewall, then you might have to allow it in the firewall you're using
this is the remote desktop client

hey thanks again for your responses, just out of intrest i tried the cmd, and it said access denied is there something i need to change on the media pc?

right ive got that to work and thats fantastic! Just out of intrest is there anyway of keeping the other computer logged on, as when i virtualy log on it logs out the actually computer? Also have just noticed i cant turn it off using this as in place of the shutdown button there is a "disconnect" button instead?
Thanks

Remote Desktop? It doesn't logoff unless you click logoff, do start disconnect or close the window. To shutdown you just do ctrl+alt+delete if you have that set to work on the remote PC, Alt+F4 on the desktop or bring up task manager.
