looking at starting to use this and have come across vnc and logmein.com

anybody have any experiences or recommendations for different software.

Logmein.com is reportedly very good, also think about Windows Remote Desktop.

if you found logmein then your work is complete.

The free version is secure, fast and reliable and is much less CPU intensive than VNC.

If it doesnt suit what you need then there are various flavours of logmein when paid for, one of which should suit your needs,
