Remote Start

I have been thinking of adding a remote start system to our cars in the household, especially now the cold mornings are here.

Only ones I can seem to find are full alarm systems and the golf has the factory alarm and immobiliser that I don't need to replace. The other cars have 3rd party systems and again, don't fancy having it all replaced.

Can anyone suggest a solution?

Sounds like a lot of expense just so you don't have to open your front door!

Leaving aside the extra engine damage you will do by doing this, what are the insurance implications of having a kit such as these?

The solution is to fit an aftermarket alarm system that you say you don't want to do. Manufacturers deliberately stop you messing with the alarm system

A) because remote start is a potential security risk and
B) allowing people to mess with the factory alarm is another risk.

how long do you have to leave the car idling to get it warm? just seems daft when the car is toasty, even with leather, within 5 minutes of driving, and i smoke so will have the window down the whole time too

and with the "heater" on trying to "warm" the car, the warm up process will take even longer with the car stood still.

and in most handbooks ive read the advise to start the car and get it moving asap

Like Matt says - it'll warm up so much quicker on the move. My little Focus is blowing hot air within a mile, even at the moment with freezing temperatures.

What year of golf is it?

Is it a manual or automatic?

guessing itll be to do with the engine running in a "cold" state for longer than normal, running its rich warm up cycle for longer, itll contaminate the oil, eventually foul the plugs, leave carbon deposits on the pistons and rings, lambda wont be happy

its an all round fail, hence they tell you to just get going

I had remote start via my clifford avant guard system

worked great and was awesome for the cold mornings

totally illegal though so be warned, my car was always parked overnight in a private gated area so wasn't anything for me to be concerned about.

They tell you to get going to save on fuel economy in most handbooks

Fluids not circulating properly until the engine is revved too. In most cases I'd imagine the user will sell the car before doing this will have any real effect on the engine though, it's probably not a problem for the 2-3 years most people keep a car for.

In Canada wouldn't most cars have block heaters not remote start? Thats my understanding of it from the movies/other forums anyway?

Why is that? Genuinely curious, especially as lots of cars in Canada for example come with remote start as standard.

No idea but manufacturers say you shouldnt do it...saying that its awesome that in Canada your sat inside the house...its like -20c outside and you can turn your car on from the comfort of your own house...trust me getting into an ice cold car is not nice:p.
