Not sure this is allowed but I thought this would be a good idea.

I am a year into my apprenticeship as an IT engineer, I mainly assist people remotely, look after clients servers and setup/repair machines.
I thought it would be a good idea to help some users on here to expand my knowledge base and obviously to fix issues you may be having.

If you have any issues either big or small that you cannot rectify I could help you remotely using Teamviewer and hopefully solve it for you.
This would be a great help to people with little IT knowledge I think.

Yeah good luck with that.

You realise most on here are enthusiasts right? So there is absolutely no way anyone would contemplate letting anyone RDP into their more than likely customer built machine?

Good luck with the apprenticeship but I can't help but think you're trying to teach granny to suck eggs.

Sounds like your current job isn't satisfying you enough or you have too much free time then if you're happy to help randomers out for free :p

It's one thing posting advice on a forum it's another remoting into a persons computer and troubleshooting for them!

I do this for my mother-in-law and brother-in-law, both of whom are irretrievable idiots when it comes to computers. I couldn't imagine doing this for a job..*shudder*

Was just an idea to help people... No need for the negativity or childish comments now is there?

Wasn't negative or childish. I actually suggested a forum you could try and would probably get a good take up.

I'm wondering more how you came to the conclusion that offering self admittedly early skills onto a forum that is known for being enthusiast, (maybe even described as #elitetier) would be a good idea?

Excuse my blinkered outlook but I see it as changing a windscreen wiper and offering your services to a mechanic....

No offence but such of service always cost something. So if something is free it means your're the product.

It's nice initiative but to be honest no one would let anyone touch their computers. Most people would ask for help on forum and if you want you can read through threads and help them but I doubt someone will give you access to their computer.

Yeah you opened yourself up there for it. Clue is in the forum name.

Just a bit of friendly advice. Try and get actual hands on experience and dont rely too much on building up remote assistance experience. You will get a better feel for it if you are stood next to the machine/with the user. You will build up your customer service better and have a greater understanding of the end user. Companies want IT Engineers field experience over remote assistance. Remote assistance is for the Service Desk bods. Its not all about what you know but delivering customer excellence. A lot of IT Support functions forget that. (like the one I work for)

(coming from one of over 25 years IT support experience)
