Could anyone recommend software with which I will be able to have total control over a remote system?

I have another machine currently running in central London (surveillance purposes)

It has a direct connection to the net through a reliable router. I bought the machine from OC for under £100 and am very pleased with it so far. However power cuts and such ofter disrupt the software which requires me to travel there dragging a monitor and keyboard with me. I managed to set up some software to start up automatically upon a reboot but some problems still persist. So fire away, what software will grant me complete control over a remote system over the net? So should there be a problem all I'd have to do is get 'them' to boot it up and I can take the rest from there from my current location.

Yeah I forgot to mention; I don't want anything with a subscription, preferably a one off payment for the software.

I don't see why they ask for subscriptions when you already pay for the internet and could easily run it from the host machine since its switched on 24/7.

I know of others like you mentioned but all are subscription based :/

I'l have a look at realvnc

How about just Windows Remote Desktop, bundled with XP and Vista Premium and above with the correct ports forwarded on the router it'll do the job.

I've used TeamViewer in the past but I can't remember if you need to get authenticated at the other end for it to connect (its free btw + No registration)

I'd second for logmein, use to to control my second PC which i don't have a monitor or keyboard for, also use it to assist relatives etc who have PC's and need help as I can take total control of them if they have problems

Taff

Doesn't WRD require there to be another person on the other end to accept the Remote assistance request?

No.

Simply enable it in the "System" part of the control panel for selected users and as long as it's on a dedicated IP or you've nat'ed the correct ports you can connect whenever you want.

Logmein for ease of use/setup

If your feeling fruity ie configuring your router (inc ssl tunnels from work etc) then go ultravnc :)
