I've recently been looking into VDI etc at work, and I had a thought about RemoteFX and how I could leaverage this tech at home - but I have 1 question, if I were to install 2k8 r2 at home on my PC, spin up a 7 ult w/ remoteFX VM, would it "lock" my graphics card? i.e. if I segment off a slice of my resources to a VM, game on my iPad (I used iTap which supports RFX) could I still game\watch HD videos etc on my PC as well?

Not talking anything overly intensive here. Most intensive would be WoW running via RFX. My box can happily run 2 copies of WoW at once as it is, but the thing is I'm just intrigued by how RFX copes with multiple demands on the graphics, both from the Hypervisor and the VM.

Just wanted to check before I go home tonight and blitz my desktop and install 2k8 r2

VDI pools and Personal virtual Desktops dont from what I understand lock the GFX card, it shares it out to all VDI's in the pool (or not for PVD's)

If your using any kind of flash content or want this kind of setup to perform to the standard of a new machine RemoteFX is a must, I have yet to test it fully but I would assume the general performance from a VDI would be a whole lot better, this is even more true for thin clients

dont forget you also get the proper USB redirection with RemoteFX as well using RDP 7

So the question is, are you wanting RemoteFX which is RDS with hardware acceleration or do you want hosted virtual windows 7 desktops?

If you want to have a go with hosted windows 7, have a look at VDI in a box from Citrix

As RemoteFX is a RDS technology a lot of games notice the RDP element and don't run correctly or just plain refuse

It's sliced and diced for want of a better word using host based rendering... it's the memory that will be the limiter. RemoteFX was introduced in SP1 so make sure you use that.

Your main limitation will be RDP 7

I'd give Server 8 Beta a whirl personally RemoteFX/RDP8 has some MAHOOSIVE improvements
