i'm looking for some software (preferably free if it exists) that will allow me to connect to my shuttle via the network and use it like i was sitting at it so i dont have to have a monitor, keyboard and mouse connected to it.

its got ubuntu and vista on

i take it you install in on both machines but what i'm worried about is will i be able to control it outside windows i.e. choose which o/s it boots into ?

Thats not going to be easy, if at all possible as you will have no way of editing the Boot loader without a IP KVM or a KVM on the shuttle.

do you have xp pro?

go to system properties, remote, tick allow remote desktop

then on other pc, do this..

start, run, mstsc

type in the computername of the shuttle, you'll be greeted with a logon screen!

its not as good as being on the pc, but its fine for casual use, ie you wouldn't use it as primary web browser, gaming or watching dvd's, but perfect as a download box or fileserver

In a word, no.
You could configure vista/ubutnu to auto log on and then load the vnc....

But afaik, there isn't a way to chose the o/s remotely? Unless you do some boot from network kinda thing..

As an alternative, you could launch straight into XP, then run ubuntu in a virtual machine (either vmware, or ms virtual PC) thus giving you the required ability.

Any network-based programs will not provide a good experience for any fast-moving action (e.g. games, tv etc.) so a hardware-based solution is the only option in that situation.
