We're hopefully moving house in a couple of weeks and currently getting quotes for moving our belongings.

For a three bedroom house, moving 2-3 miles away including no packing or other services we've been quoted £1,580 (Pickfords) and £1,250 (local company). This seem very expensive.

Has anyone moved recently and has experience of removal companies?

Sounds about right. Think I was getting quotes around that when I wanted to move.

Ended up renting a van and just doing it myself with a few mates. Paid them with love and beer.

I'm thinking the same. I only really need help with the larger items of furniture. The rest is just boxes.

You can buy a lot of beer for £1,500

My wife is adamant we get a removal company though.

For only a few miles you are far better off renting a LWB transit for a day. We've moved a lot (countries and continents) and I've nothing good to say about any removals company. At the end of they day they use low paid chimps to move your goods. These low paid chimps know they're low paid chimps, so they really don't give a flying ****.

For my last move of a similar distance I found a 'man with a van' (Luton Box).

It took a few trips, but with such a short distance it was all done in a couple of hours and didn't cost much more than van hire would have done.

The fragile/valuable stuff was moved in the car.

A van for the larger stuff, can be easily done in a day. Leave the smaller stuff til last and you could do it over a week.
Got contents of a 3 bed house into a LWB, 2 cars (1 with trailer and roof box) for a 160 mile move all done in 2 days between 4 of us for £150 inc fuel and takeout afterwards.

Also used a local removal company for similar contents and mileage and cost about £650 8 years ago. Quotes from the nationals were double that.

From memory we paid around £1000 to £1100 to an independent to pack (Thursday) and then move us on the Friday. That was three guys each day with their truck. We also got some money back once we took the boxes back.

DIY can work if you can get access to both properties at once (moving between rentals perhaps) but multiple-trips in a small van doesn't work if you're in a chain. We were out of our old house by 10am but due to the chain (only 4 houses!) grinding slowly, finally got the keys about 3.30pm so were unloading about 4pm. You'd need a storage unit or something and then have to double-move everything.

That's insane! I'm moving (hopefully next month) and I've had quotes of £500-£600 for moving a 3bedroom house 7miles. Think I might get them to pack too (will be more obviously).

That's a large local company, god bless the north :p

No way am I attempting it on my own, it will be stressful enough, much rather pay for the ease.

The last time we moved was the last time I move myself.....I'll gladly pay £1000 so I can stand up straight for the week after. Its amazing the amount of crap you can accumulate over the years. And everything is so heavy once you get over 40

Surely that's a perfect time for a clearout!

I really don't understand people who would pay effectively 4 figures for someone to pack their crap up - do they unpack it at the other end?

There's only really a small amount of stuff that you'd need another bloke for (unless your wife/GF is feeling particularly strong), i.e. washing machine.

Most blokes should be able to carry a 50" flat screen without breaking a sweat.

Man with a van

Seriously, I used a guy last time we moved, cost about £150 for 4 hours.
Dont underestimate the time to load, unloading is easier as you can just heap it up and carry inside one van is unloaded
There is the option to have them help load or just watch whilst you struggle, pay the extra

How much beer exactly is on offer? ;)

So you're leaving the sunny shores of Milton Road eh?

2-3 miles, I'd hire a van myself and do it and get a mate in to help with heavy items.

We are due to move in the next month and will be paying £240 for 2 men and a Luton van for 1 trip of 3 mils. Any extra trips are £60. This is with a company called Spartan Removals.

I don't know about prices down south but anything over £7-800 for a 3 bed seems crazy.

Think I paid just over £400 to a local company for removal of a 3 bed house. I did get stung for another £180 for waiting fees so closer to £600 all in. But still way less than the OPs been quoted!
