Removal of gas meter

I want to have a gas meter removed and the gas supplier didn't seem too clued up on it. They said there will be an £80 charge to remove it but there may be an additional charge from the infrastructure supplier.

I am going all electric but do not want the entire gas line removed, just capped off with meter removed would be sufficient.

Can anyone shed any light on this process?

Thanks.

Why all electric? Heating via electric is very expensive?

I've only ever had one removed, but it was a simple process of calling whomever is the meter supplier (my case was British Gas in London).

It might be the OP has solar panels or something. By removing it you are bringing additional cost. Out of interest why not just leave it? You can just shut all valves and it wouldn't cost you any more.

Forgot about that, are there any suppliers that don't have a standing charge?

Nope standing charge is to pay for the upkeep and maintenance of the infrastructure not rend of the meters so to speak.

So would you get charged if you told them you were moving house and to close the account?
Won't work, as you still own the property until sold you would still have to pay standing charge until you left the property

Rather than talk to your supplier (who tend to be a pita) talk with the main line provider, Wales & west/SGN and so on.

There are some tariffs with zero standing charge, would probably be easier to just change the gas only to one of those, turn the valve off and forget getting the meter removed

They will still ask for meter readings and a direct debit amount but you can let this build up and get a refund every so often, bit of a pain though

keep electric on another tariff as the zero standing change tariffs have a high unit charge and will work out more expensive

SSE and EBICO did zero standing charge tariffs last time i looked

I had an air source heat pump fitted so had to get rid of the gas meter. Just called British Gas who were my supplier and told them that I wanted to have the meter removed so that I wasn't paying the standing charge. They came out within the week, took the meter out and capped the supply. There was no charge as far as I can remember.

I paid a very nominal charge, but it was commercial with a standing charge of about £1 a day. By the time I'd come and worked here it had racked up nearly £1200 of standing charges and no consumption as the gas boiler had been decommissioned. What a waste of money!

It's a house being converted to two flats and a boiler/central heating does not make sense for the initial capital outlay nor the size of the flats.

I rang up the current supplier (Ebico which is zero standing charge) and their metering team will be out to remove it in a couple of weeks for a charge of £80.00.
