Hi all.

My toilet is slowly trickling water through the cistern overflow into the pan.

It’s a push button toilet where you can’t just lift away the lid.

I have leverage the two buttons out using a screwdriver where I expected to see a screw to turn to be able to unfasten the cistern lid. However there is no screw underneath the 2 buttons.

I have also tried unscrewing the entire push button mechanism by hand and although it does unscrew a short distance it does at that point stop turning meaning I can only lift the cistern lid off the top of the cistern by a centimetre or so, but the push button is still attached to the internal mechanism of the cistern.

Has anyone got any ideas what other devious way there might be to get into this cistern?

Many thanks.

ours just lifts off without any force other than its weight.

floats is all i know is in there. i'd call a plummer.

I replaced ours last year and had the exact same problem - the cistern lid was flush and tight against the cistern; iirc I was able to pop the plastic buttons out after removing the collar trim, and there was a screw below them. Unfortunately, I undid it with a bit too much gusto, and soon found it was plastic and snapped!

As our seals were both perished, I just went to B&Q and purchased an entire new flush mechanism; never done anything like this before, but it was easy to change it all over, I had to unbolt the cistern form the wall to get it all installed - but it was an hour's work once I figured out what to do. The new flusher button has a plastic 'tube' connecting it to the flusher unit itself, so we can now lift the lid off enough to get at the bits inside if needed.

Are you sure there isn't a screw underneath, I've done two recently?
Perhaps dirt on it.
I’ll have another check.

Where I was expecting to see a screw is just a flat white disc. Ive tried scraping this with the screwdriver to see if dirt was concealing the notch for the screwdriver head but it’s just a flat white surface. This flat white bit, when pushed down with the screwdriver, flushes the toilet.

Wait a minute, I think a white cap covers the buttons and you lift that up.
I had the same problem and watched a You Tube video.

Here’s a picture of what is underneath the two buttons once removed.

The white circle in the middle is where I was expecting a screw to turn to loosen the push button mechanism from the internal cistern fixtures but it is not a screw.

And this is as far as I can unscrew the button mechanism from the top of the cistern. I now can’t screw it either way.

Might be my gammy eyes - but that looks liek a phillips head down there, just with some **** filling it in.

Sadly it’s not, I’ve scraped the top of this part with the screwdriver to see if debris was covering a screw head but it’s just flat. Pushing it down causes the toilet to flush so I don’t think it could be a screw holding the cistern lid on.

Deffo my gammy eyes then :D

Chances are you will need new seals, and I think a set was only 20-ish quid (new flusher and buttons etc) - I'd be tempted to just beast it out, and replace it all. But that's just me :p

TBH, I have been eyeing up new toilets anyway so this might just be the push I need. The design of the pan with this one means it is skid mark central so I’d be glad to get shot. And as a short projection toilet I also can’t easily find a new seat to replace the yellowing one I currently have!

I have one of those kinda sorta.

What happened with mine is that if you try to pull up the cistern lid you shatter the valve which the lid is screwed to by one plastic screw inside the press button assembly. The valve itself is connected to the body.

A relative thought it would be a good idea to put those toilet blocks in multiple cisterns by heaving up the lid

Infuriating how much those valves are.

Check around your toilet for brand names you can look up for any shenanigans specific to your valve and button assembly.

All I know is it's a B&Q job from many years ago.
