Does anyone here know if the wee electric window switch assembly in the drivers side of a 2001 polo can just be pried up and out from the door card? Or does the door card need fremoved to get it out?

The reason i ask is that my drivers side switch for the passenger window appears to have shorted somehow, i must have got it wet or something. When i got home tonight and removed the key from the ignition the dashboard lights, ashtray lights and switch led's didnt go out like normal, they just remained on.

After fiddling with a few switches i found that the passenger window switch wasnt working correctly, if i touched it at all the passenger window would wind down (the switch hasnt worked in months) and the other interior lights would go out. Then whilst holding it down and pondering how to fix it, smoke started to some out if the switch, which was a bit alarming, so i figured the best thing to do would be to disconnect the car battery so the car doesnt do an inpression of a bonfire overnight and see if i can pull out the switch in the morning.

Anyone know if i can just lever the assembly up and out without breaking something?

Although not experienced with the polo usually the switch can be levered out or the plastic/trim that it sits in. Usually they are removed before the door card due to the cabling to them.

you'll need to remove the door card, there are metal spring clips holding it in place so you'll probably break something if you just pry it from the top

the door cards only take about 5 mins to remove, screw off the door pin, pop off the centre of the door handle with something sharp then there are 2 or 3 large philips screws under there you remove. There are is another screw at the top to remove, near the wing mirror. You can then pop it off carefully

you have to remove the whole assembly as the switches pop out down the way rather than up the way

the contacts on the switches go dodgy after a while, the switches are around £12 each to replace

Yeah, the switches in it have been changed a couple of times already, that's why I just left it last time, fed up changing them and it wasn't exactly a critical problem.

Got up late today, so just had to get a taxi into work (also it was bollock freezing and the car was a block of ice), will have a hoke later. where does the door pin screw off from? I don't think I've seen any obvious things to unscrew on the door.

you grab it with your fingers and turn it :D

The doorpin is threaded

You will see a screw if you look at the front-top of the doorcard and the other screws are behind the centre of the grab handle (pop centre out with something like a flatblade screwdriver, although gently pop it out working the top and the bottom evenly or you might crack it)
