Today thought I'd try some cunning mod that lots of other ZX10 owners do which is to remove the secondary flaps on the intakes.

These little babys are actuated by a servo and alter with revs, apparently to smooth the throttle response at low revs..

Here are some piccys of operation, after test riding not sure on mod, bike seem much louder at low revs but can't say I can feel any difference at all. Was a right PITA to do so they are staying out now... might use them as drinks coasters or something :)

Scariest bit of job was removing the screws on the flaps, they were loctited in and didnt want to strip one or even worse, drop them in there. All came out fine, didn't even need a hot air gun to shift them.

Doing stuff like this is what sundays are for...

I can't imagine that gives any power increase at all, since the major restriction (if any) will be the throttle spindle itself.

It's a weird setup I know, but this secondary set are controlled directly by ECU via a servo and stay semi closed at lower revs.. apparently to stop fools looping bike in lower gears.

I've heard you can gain a few BHP up top as they never fully open, and if your totally nuts you can pull the center pin right out and epoxy up the holes for even better air flow. That sounds abit OTT though

I used to have a ZZR1400 which had a similar setup. It didnt add any extra top end power but bulked up the mid range substantially, especially in gears 1,2,3. The secondary butterflies are actuated as you say by the ECU, but the interesting bit is that they dont open at all, or not fully in the first three gears which means you dont get instant power. Useful for noobs, but if your buying a big bike I dont need the health and safety police second guessing my throttle openings!

yeah I think the mod originated on the ZZR... been for another blast this time on a B road and throttle response is deffo much better as don't have to wait for dumb servo to tell me I can accelerate fully.

job well done :)

tbh id imagine its pointless (powerwise) unless you remove the spindle. what youve done is alter the throttle response. for better or worse, as long as youre happy with it keep it like it

I removed the secondaries and spindle on my GSXR TB's, but mainly because I couldn't be bothered building the ECU to drive the secondaries.
