Into another board?

Basically, What i want to know is if i have to put some thermal compound if im removing the heatsink of the cpu and transfering it over to another motherboard, and putting the heatsink back on it?

Or can you just transfer it over no problem.

Just wondering. I hope you understand.

Thank you ;)

Better to clean it and the heatsink with some isopropyl alcohol and re-apply the thermal compund as you install it in the new board although it won't 'break' the cpu just moving it over and leaving what's on it...probably.

while you're here meths - greasing up a topless CPU (ooer)

just a small dollop on the die?

\hijack over/

yes then spread it evenly and thinly across any surface that will be touching,

doesnt need to be too thick as all your doing is filling in the tiny imperfections in the metals to stop atmospheregetting between them.

Arctic Silver recommends not doing that anymore on a CPU with a heatspreader, a small amount (one grain of rice) in the center and the heatsink does the rest.

I put a small blob on the die then put the heatsink in place to spread it out. Then I remove the heasink and wipe it with a lint free cloth to get off any excess then refit it on the cpu.

so how much do you need ontop of a dual core then? i know its just supposed to be a thin film of it, but its like toast, i have it thick buttered but i just see it as 'normal' buttering lol, soz about the metaphor! Basically, how thin is thin?

Just hope i've put the right amount on mine thats all
