Went to remove a radiator yesterday for decorating, closed the TRV and thought I'd closed the lockshield valve too but a lot of water was coming out and realised that I was actually draining the system!

I had turned the head on the lockshield valve anti-clockwise (thinking this was correct to isolate it) and then realised it should've been clockwise. Fair enough, so I tried to turn it clockwise earlier and it became much looser and then black liquid started seeping out of it. In a panic I quickly turned it back anti-clockwise to stop the black liquid, but wondered which is the correct way for isolating it now!

Can anyone step in and offer some advice?

Lefty loosy resulted in black liquid seeping out of the top.

It doesn't matter now as I've just tried again and the square top of the lockshield has sheered off :(
