Right, so how do I remove those services altogether from that list? None of them actually exist anymore.

Right, I wasn't sure how to do this. I need to remove a service myself. I searched the registry for "LexBce Server", the service I need to remove. I couldn't find it. So I checked out the path the service used and found, "C:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXBCES.EXE" and found a whole list of services in the registry.

Go to regedit, if you haven't already, and then navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet0001\Services\ and you should find the exe that the service uses. If you aren't sure what exe/path the service uses goto the Services menu and right-click on the service, select Properties and check out the "Path to executable" field.

I'd export the registry beforehand just in case something goes wrong. Then select the service key you want rid off and delete. Reset and see if XP works fine and check out the services menu again. It should be gone. If anything goes wrong, just double-click on the exported registry file you made to restore the registry to before status.

double click the service to see what its shortname is..

service shortname needs to be in "SERV" format, and it needs to be stopped and disabled
