A couple of weeks ago I had to have some plastic stuck over my rear windscreen area as I lost the glass and getting replacement was rather slow.
This has all now been solved - new glass in place and now all the glass removed from inside the boot-lid.
I'm left with a 2" wide area of "adhesive" from the back of the plastic temporary coverings which runs the entire width of the car.

What should I be using to remove this without fear of damage to the paintwork?

Get some proper automotive Tar remover. Works wonders.

Let it soak in for about 10 minutes then it will just wipe away.

I have used the hair dryer method before, works wonders for starting to get adhesive badges etc off as a first step, but once they are off and you only have adhesive left the proper chemicals will get rid of it with ease.

Last one I bought was Autoglym Intensive Tar Remover. 5 or 6 quid.

AutoSmart Tardis is great and will get it off, but any solvent should do it.

WD40 has been mentioned and will be fine, or even petrol on a rag will do it (appropriate fire precautions of course - no sparks or flames!).

Hairdryer and scraping is asking for damage and shouldn't be required for this,

Whatever you use it will take the wax off, so wax the panel afterwards.
