The rod ends very probably don't come apart. Usually you need to undo the pinch bolt and remove the entire assembly from the splined gear shaft.
If you literally only want to remove the rod itself, then undo the two lock nuts (one at either end) and unscrew the rod; there is a left hand thread at one end so both ends will screw/unscrew at the same time.
I haven't looked at it since last weekend, having another go on Sunday. Thanks for your help, just glad I didn't try too hard to separate the joints on the end!
