Hi guys, I have an old(ish) MSI gaming laptop which has a cracked screen bezel, so every time you open the lid, it puts pressure on the damaged part and cracks it further.

Now, I've never really used this as a laptop, more as a mobile desktop (always plugging it into external monitors and leaving the lid closed).

I was thinking about just taking the lid/screen off completely, which will make it a bit easier/lighter to transport as well.

Anyone done this before? I'm not sure if the laptop/driver will know that the screen ribbon has been disconnected if there is an HDMI cable to output to instead? Or if it would cause any issues?

Thoughts?

Hi there

Would you like me to ask our tech guys and come back to you before you do it?

They will know for sure!

Recently I took apart a HP laptop. Wanted to see was it the inverter (cheap fix) or the backlight gone on the screen. Anyway a new inverter didn't fix it. So it wasn't economical to fix. But in putting it all back, I slipped with the pliers and ripped the screen cable out of its plug. But even with this, the VGA out to a monitor still worked.

Of course that doesn't mean it will work with other laptops.

It will work fine, but the Wi-Fi antennas are in the screen bezel usually. If you remove them then your wireless performance will be terrible.

If you're using it wired then obviously that isn't a problem.

Awesome cheers for the advice guys. I just removed the screen and the laptop works fine :) I've got a decent USB wifi adapter that was better than the internal wifi so I don't need to worry about that. It's so much lighter now :p
