I have an Acer Travelmate 530 laptop with a completely cracked screen.

Is it be possible to completely detach the top half/flap of the laptop and use it with an external monitor?

Yes, but you're likely to be left with half the hinges and perhaps cables (that pass through the hinges) too.

So it is ok for these cables which pass through the hinges to be disconnected for it to work with an external monitor?

I dont mind if the cables and hinges shows as i plan to use it on a desk with a tft screen. Would be much better than now as i have to lay the screen completely flat on the desk which takes double the space.

Yea i should be fine,i've replaced quite a few lappy screens of which a couple did'nt even have the screen cables but outputed video fine with an extrernal monitor.

Yeah, I don't think many (if any) of the screens have any implicit intelligence or presence checks.

Why not pick up a keyboard and mouse and stuff the laptop in a drawer/on a shelf/behind the screen :)

Re-used a few "obsolete" laptops for friends/family that way.

Removed the screen with all the cables attached to it.

Tested.....worked a treat.....thank you guys.

Just need to save for a tft now.

why not look for a replacement screen. i have a samsung x10 that had no cd drive and wasnt picking up the hard disk at all.

i bought a replacement drive (samsung wanted 180 quid for because its slimmer than standard drives) and a replacement hdd ribbon cable (quote 70 quid) for 40 quid all together off an auction site.
