I've got a Laptop with Vista Home Premium 64bit and I had Nero v7 installed on it, which never really worked well...

Being the laptop is a HP system is comes with Cyberlinks DVDsuite which does all the same stuff and works...

so I un-installed Nero from the system using the 'Nero Cleaning tool' from Aheads website..

Now I thought this would remove ALL traces od nero from the system, including the 'autorun' dialogue.. but it hasn't!.. it still askes me if i want to burn with Nero etc... when I put a blank disc in the drive... but the icons are the blank white 'No Icon' from microsoft cos the program isn't there...

This looks messy and is annoying as they are the top options with cyberlink being far down the list!!..

Is there a way of removing these options from the dialogue??.. XP had tweakUI which let you remove crap entries.. but Vista64 doesn't seem to have such a helpful program!!..

Any help would be greatfully recieved..

Cheers
Simon. :)

Cheers but!...

Any other utilities out there??... like a version of TweakUI for Vista??

FYI...

Just in case anyone has a similar issue, the Reg entries to look at are:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ AutoplayHandlers \ Handlers \ <handler>

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ AutoplayHandlers \ EventHandlers \ <Event Name>

I went through each key and deleted every NERO string.

I'd still like to find a TweakUI for Vista though!!... hint hint!!..

Yep!!...

Its a known problem in Vista aparently!!.. as it was in XP till the cleanup tool... they've not sorted the tool yet!! (from what I've been reading)

IMGBurn does a pretty good job to be honest. Some good tutorials on their forum for getting it burning DVD video files and the like as well.... not as "polished" (yes, I know) as Nero in some ways, but costing now is a definite bonus.

I've recently been having serious grief with a Nero 7 > Nero 9 upgrade and now neither Nero package burns perfectly by just putting in a blank and clicking start as I did before.... IMGBurn, CDBurnerXPPro both just work, as does Vista's in built burning engine, but Nero now won't burn anything without a speed test and even then, it's debatable if it'll work. Ahead said "it's your drive and your media", which given that I've burned 60+ discs from the same batch without any trouble with IMGBurn, I think not.

As regards the Nero cleaning tool. I ended up running it 5 times, and even then it still found traces to remove. Only a regclean as described above finally got it out (when I was doing testing to prove Ahead wrong).

YMMV etc. but IMGBurn gets my vote.

Have you tried CCleaner? Most people use it to remove files from their computer, however it has on the left hand pane an option to clean up your registry. It removes orphaned links etc once you remove applications.

Not 100% sure if it actually runs on Vista 64bit though?

Have you tried CCleaner?

Unfortunately, even CCleaner didn't do the job. :-(

I would have thought Ahead's own tools would do the job, but instead they've proven to be a completely load of danglies.

Working after some severe coaxing, but I think after the Sunderland AFC effort that was Nero 8, I should have known Nero 9 would be more like my own team is right now!

Just to reiterate to OP: step away from the Nero. IMGBurn is the way to the light.

Ahhh... didn't catch the Hijack!!... I was after a Nero Cleaner... didn't see the Alternative to Nero bit!!...

:p:p

... :)

It all seem to go wrong after Nero7 for me. Change isn't always for the best it would seem.
