Removing nVidia Drivers from Vista 64

I'm having a bit of a game with my 6800GT under my new Vista 64 build. No matter what driver I install (tried latest, Omega, Windows Update) it's more unstable than the one the OS installs automatically.

I intend to get a 4870, but until then I want to ensure I've removed all traces of the failed nVidia drivers, but leave the card running on the 'default' ones. I've downloaded Driverweeper, and wondered if this will remove ALL nVidia drivers, including the ones that came with Vista?

If anyone has any suggestions I'd be grateful!

I used driver sweeper seemed to work a treat, but then i remove drivers properly...

Best off removing them al lthen getting the vista ones via WU

my 7900gt was unstable in vista (some older cards just are), for a whole year it was unstable (perfectly fine in xp) rma'd it in the end

I think I'm in the same boat as bledd. My Mobo is Intel P45 - all my core stuff is brand new, the GT is the only old bit left. I always intended to upgrade the graphics once the base system was up and running, but the graphics drivers have been an absolute dog, the only way I can watch a video (and yes, I have the Vista codec pack + 64 bit extension installed) is by using the Microsoft drivers in Vista, *every* other 'proper' driver has run like a pig.

I've just accidentally re-worded my question better - "Will Driversweeper remove the Microsoft nVidia drivers?".

All I want to do today is to clean up any traces of the other drivers I've tried and un-installed. This is partly because the sleep function in Vista (which worked fine until the other night) now blue-screens the PC. I've read that nVidia drivers can often cause this... hence me wanting to tidy up as much as possible.

I'm reluctant to install any newer or 'better' driver because I seriously think they will make things worse, I'm happy to not game for a bit until funds allow a 4870.

I've basically written off the 6800GT for Vista...

that's the main issue i had with my 7900gt, it hated sleep mode, big time

report it to the manufacturer, might be a known problem and a free replacement :)

All you should need to do is use the nvidia uninstaller and then go into device manager and uninstall the gfx card driver manualy. it will delete the driver files so wont come back when you reboot. Too many times ive had the so called driver cleaners do more harm then good by breaking the registry and no longer allowing me to install the drivers properly.

Good point, it's a Leadtek, I'll think about that...

Madmatty: What I want is for the MS drivers to remain - would your method fully remove all traces of nVidia drivers? Obviously this part will be more relevant when I have a 4870 in my hands!

difficult to say. when uninstalling in device manager it will give option to delete the actuall driver files so it cant load them on next boot. However vista does keep a backup of every driver ever installed , so its impossible to delete every trace. as long as nvidia's own un installer was used before hand, i dont think there will be an issue.
