Removing Schultz/Underbody Seal

Hi there,

A mate of mine works at a garage. Back before Christmas,
as a favour for me her replaced the fron tyres on my car. While my car (completely rust free unblemished body work at the time) was on the ramp, he offered to put some underbody seal on as they have a shultz gun. I was more than happy to get something for nothing so on went the schultz.

Since then, I've noticed that where the schultz went on, a few littlebits of paint work on the outside of the body is beginning to show red rust patches ad the bottom of the wheel arches. I have touched them up with a paint pen, however I attribute it to there being schultz on the other side of the metal, as my car is always kept clean, and was previously blemish free.

Is there anyway to remove the schultz?

Cheers

Heat gun and a scraper and it's a messy unpleasant job :(

If you only want to get a small amount off, depending on how well the surface was prepared and I'm guessing not very well, you might be able to just crack a chunk off. Unfortunately when it's not put on well you get water underneath it and it hides the rust.

Edit: It's called Schutz by the way, Shultz was the guy who drew the Peanuts cartoons ;)

this is the big problem with it the surface needs to be prepped very well even to the point of using specialist anti rust primers prior to shutz, if you just slap shutz on yes the car may look nice when unde rneeth but usually its rusting away like a pig as the moisture gets underneeth.

people used to swear by this stuff ytears ago but it seems its not as good as the older generation claim and has lead to the death of many cars by inproper application.

these days the best underbody anti rusting imo is just primering with a antirust/anti stonechip primer and then paint body colour over it, looks neat and does the job, will not trap moisture either ;)

removing it is the most unpleasent job, heat gun and scrpaer is the only way and it takes a lot of time, took me almost 2 weekends to completly remove it from a mini before :(
good luck

Hmm

few littlebits of paint work on the outside of the body

Which bits of the body?

None of the metal pieces which were sprayed would be visible normally, they would be the underside of the chassis.

The wheel arch linings are generally plastic not metal and wouldnt have been painted.

Possibly some salt or something got stuck between a piece of trim and the bodywork causing some corrosion?

If you are seeing rust come through on the top surface of the bodywork, then either it has absoluetly nothing to do with the schutz and it caused by stonechips etc. or the rust has perforated all the way through the bodywork, in which case you have a fairly horrible repair job to fix it properly. I find it hard to believe that the schutz would cause this in 6 months however, if the car really had no rust before it was applied.

The only rust I can see is a bit of reddening at the bottom of the wheel arch about the size of a 1 p penny.

The Shultz has been put on the bottom sills and overlaps some of the paint work (not visible unless you look at the bottom of the car).

Can't believe it. Would it be adviseable to get rid of the car pronto, as I dont want it on my hands if/when it develops chronic rust problems.
