Here's an image of the bar I'm referring to:

Google searches bring up suggestions of clicking on the drop down arrow to the right of the magnifying glass and selecting 'manage search providers', but since it's the only search provider listed, the option to remove it is greyed out.

How do I get rid of it please? It shows other people my last Google search, which may not always be desirable!

(in before 'get Firefox' :p)

I think Google toolbar maybe in the Add/Remove Programs section in control Panel.

Im not sure as i use Google Chrome.........IE is FAIL :D

It's a registry hack:

HKLM > Software > Policies > Microsoft > Internet Explorer

Create key called "Infodelivery"

Create key called "Restrictions"

Add Dword "NoSearchBox" and set to 1

Ah....bum. It's a work PC so although I can get into regedit, I can't see that key (there's no internet explorer once I get to the Microsoft section) so I presume it's loading from the server.

Thanks anyway. Guess I'll just have to be careful.

marc2003 - adding another provider won't disappear the bar.

E1T5Y - thanks but Google toolbar isn't installed. I think that's something different.

If the Internet Explorer key doesn't exist, create it. Mine has nothing in it bar the keys I told you to create anyway :)

add another provder or disable suggestions?

This, it's pretty easy, just click the little triangle at the end. Having said that the search box is a little pointless now, I never use it because I just type the search term in the address box, does exactly the same thing.

well of course it won't. but i thought it might allow you to delete google so your previous searches couldn't be seen.

Fine, but I obviously get exactly the same problem except with Bing written there instead of Google ;).

I've just done this myself but used gpedit.msc to do it....

Thanks but that option's not there on mine. It just looks like this:

Looks like I'm going to have to tread the murky path of registry alterations on a work PC!

You don't have the GP object because you aren't on Vista or above ;) It never existed in XP.

So yes, you'll have to delve into the deepest depths of the registry :p

Yes it does. You just need to add it to the list of custom ADM templates (inetresNEW in my case)

It worked! \0/

I added the template per Guest2 (mine was just called inetres) then enabled the 'prevent...' setting per shoot1st, restarted IE8 and the pesky box has left the building.

Thanks everyone :).

good stuff. Yes, the default one you get is inetres but i renamed and added the new one because we currently still use settings from the inetres template.
