I have a non-modular PSU with several unused cables.
Is it possible to cut them back and re-terminate them, and if so, where do you buy the various sockets/plugs ?

I realize this might not be something that some should try but given some common sense and care it may make the difference between me needing a new PSU or not to fit into a small case !

Probably doable but I personally wouldn't risk it, if anything goes wrong the PSU has the potential to damage other components and not just itself.

Modular PSUs don't cost much these days, I'd recommend just shelling out a little bit of money for one :)

It can be done but the tools and bits would cost more than a decent cheaper PSU, and not to mention the time it takes to do it properly.

Also it'd void the warranty.

also, and i don't mean this to be rude, but if you have to ask how or can it be done in relation to modding a psu then there's a strong possibility you shouldn't be doing it.

messing about with a psu can do more than just short out a motherboard

Might be easier just to cut the cables an resolder. All you'd need then is some heatshrink, some solder, a soldering iron and a reasonably steady hand.

I guess I should have worded this differently - I am competent to cut cables and terminate them having rewired several houses over the years (and yes, they all get checked and passed !) but was wondering where to get new molex connectors and the like.
Given that my PSU is perfectly fit for use (it is a Corsair TX650) but I want to use it in a smaller case where it will be a struggle to accommodate all the spare cable it makes sense to cut back the excess.
I have the tools, but not the parts.
A cheap PSU is cheap for a reason, and so not something I would want to use in my pc !

There were a few long threads over at overclock.net forums, I stumbled across them when I was looking into psu cable braiding, as some wanted to do the same as you, and IIRC its a bit of a minefield getting the correct and official molex parts, but have a look there I'm sure you'll find all you need :)
