Hi all, got 2 different computers, neither of which I built from scratch (second hand etc) but I cannot get the heatsink off in either case, I remove the clips, but when pulling it just does not budge.... as its in 2 seperate pcs im guessing im missing something, please help!

Thanks,
Jcb33! :)

Probably using the standard thermal material, its more than likely set like concrete. Try twisting a little when pulling.

Having the goop heated up might help it budge. Stress out the CPU for a while or bust out a hairdryer if it's in bits :D

Using dental floss as a saw has woked for me in the past

Never heard that one before, might try that next time Im in a tight spot.

This has happened to me a few times, I've always pulled out the hairdryer!

Dont just pull it, I did that the other day (like an idiot) and ripped the cpu out of the socket bending a couple of pins on the way out.

Managed to bend them back and it works fine now but it made me sweat a bit :p

i've used a hairdryer before, the dental floss sounds like a great idea! just be gentle and keep a look in to make sure the cpu isnt lifting at the same time.

good luck

Could not get the HS off my old processor the other week and someone (as above) suggested running the PC for a while (IE. heat it up a bit). This worked a treat for me, HS just came straight off.
