has anyone ever managed to remove the ram heatsinks that come with zalman coolers? got a mate who wants to try a different gpu cooler but the ramsinks are still on the ram and he is unsure of how to remove them without damaging the card.

I have just removed them off an x1900xtx with no real probs apart from sore fingers!
My advice would be to use the card for a while so it gets warm.
Take a tea towel or similar and use to grasp the ramsink. Gently twist the ramsinks a small amount at first and then increase the angle slowly. The ram sink when loose, will come off with a twist and pull motion.

Best of luck.

right i will let him know. is it best to heat up the sinks using a hair dryer? since gaming then removing the card from the system will probably make the ramsinks cool again in temps.

hes right, twisting them after card has been under load for a while, they do screw up your fingers mind, which is why i use vantec copper ones

yep he managed to remove them just as you said by twisting from side to side then one final 360degree spit and it came off. he tested the card after and no problems with it.

kind of odd that they just don;t fall off when car is underload. thermal pads are funny in that way.
