Removing Vista from boot selection

Friend has windows xp installed on his laptop.
And he denies ever installing Vista, yet during boot up there is a choice, Vista or "Earlier version of Windows" (XP)

Vista is the default choice but doesn't work, says something about corrupt system. XP works fine.

Its a rush job, so all I want to do is remove the option, and have it automatically go to XP.
Since i can't get to Vista i can't change the startup from in there, and in XP all it lists is XP in "Startup and Recovery" options.

Any ideas.
