Removing xp from 98 dual boot

Hi,

I have been asked to remove Windows XP from an old machine that originally had 98 on. The XP install appears to be corrupt and would like to revert back to just Windows 98. Is there a way of safely removing XP and the dual boot option, just leaving the current 98 installation intact?

I have played about with the boot.ini file, but to avail.
