rename windows folder during XP install,

is there any way to rename the windows (and program files, documents and settings) from an old XP install during a new install?

so windows becomes windows.old, "program files" becomes "program files.old"

I know I can boot some disk and rename them before I do the install (which is what I do) but I want to try and automate this process a biter better,

I want to do this so all the original files are still accessible if required, I dont want to change the fresh install to use folder names other than default.

I can't help with the renaming of files before install but why not just backup the files on an external before a reinstall. It's easier surely?.

Why would you want to do that? A clean install is meant to be a clean install any files are lost unless backed up during the before format stage.
