I'm sorry about posting this here. I could not decide whether this was a Photography question (I decided it wasn't as it's not about taking photos or cameras), a Windows question (again I decided it wasn't) or something else.

The question: I have loads of digital photos in folders. They are a mess. They are all called IMG_####.JPG.

When I'm trying to organise them, there are loads of file names that are the same.

Is there a way that I can rename a group of photos with a new, consecutive title, e.g Holiday1.JPG, Holiday2.JPG etc?

Thanks

And sorry again if this is the wrong place to post.

You could also select all the images in the directory and rename one of them to Holiday.jpg and all would automatically be renamed Holiday (2).jpg, Holiday (3).jpg...etc.

Shell

ren IMG_*.* Holiday_*.*

You can highlight the list of piccies you want to rename, right click the first one and click rename and type in the new name. It will rename the rest for you with sequential numbers. Only works in XP as far as I know.

Edit: CURSES! Beaten to it

I just select them in explorer and it does it for you as explained above. Far less hassle than installing special utilities to do it for you...

Irfanview is a great viwer to have in any case though :)
Opens a whole bunch of formats and loads up as fast as notepad
