am i mad to be hankering after buying a gt turbo.

had one in late 1990s and had it for a year or so and made a grand on it when i sold it. was an immaculate phase 2 with 40000 miles on it and fsh. always regretted selling it and just starting to fancy another one. ive got a bmw e39 523i at the moment but dont use it that much partially due to fuel prices but mainly as i have 3 motorbike and am usually on them. and if i use the car its generally only short journeys of upto 7 miles on average.

decent ones seem to be few and far between and are around 4k from what i can see.

thoughts?

There was a 12k R5 GTT for sale on 4starclassics.com recently. Chap I worked with had one before and was hankering after it (he drives a GTR).

Still think the Raiders looked awesome :)

Not sure I'd risk one now thou.

my memories of the car are fond ones and remember it as being very quick and just great fun but the ride was harsh and was squeeky and noisy but did have big exhaust and dump valve. wasnt massivly reliable but that was down to a dodgy immobilsier that caused ecu issues but parts werent too expensive and mostly easy to work on.

the economy was very good if memory serves me correct if driven sensibly due it only being a 1.4 if driven off off turbo. tolerable on the motorway but from memory you couldnt really cruise between 65 and 75 as the turbo would kick in and out in top gear at the that speed.

dont seem to be that many decent ones about

OP in the near future:

looking on ebay original ones seem pretty rare especially when id like it in blue which was the colour on the one i used to have.

You may also need to find a time machine to enjoy it in the way you plan to because I somewhat doubt owning a 25 year old Renault is quite the same as owning one half the age..

I guess you have to be old to understand the love for renault 5 turbos.

No that doesnt help either.

I was in my teens and driving and there were still plenty of these about in the mid 90's.

Never saw the appeal of them then either.

Like the MG Metro turbo, that was another one that went over my head, believe it or not I had a friend called Gary who had one, 9 seconds odd to 60 mph!

I drove one of these again recently, used to love them back in the day, the one I drove was a true rocket roller skate however, if felt like it was stuck together with spit and sawdust.

Rattles, road noise, completely raw... I would only entertain one for track days if I could keep it in a garage to keep the tin worm at bay.

I for one love the 5, but there are so many out there that have been neglected :( one round near me, some chav owns it and it's a heap, such a shame.

My dad had an MG Metro ,NA, 1350cc 0-60 in under 7 seconds ;). He did used to build and race Mini's back in the day though.
