My mums old car which we are currently trying to sell has a problem. It's a 2004 2.0 VVT petrol Privelege. Basically when you start the car it sounds like a diesel, sounds really rough. It drives fine, but the garages have told us it could need a cam belt kit, but that costs £200 and they can't guarantee that it'll fix the problem!

So we're kind of stuck, don't want to spend money. Ot not to be fixed, any one have any idea what it could be?

So you've been, had a mechanic diagnose it and because it wasn't what you want to hear...your asking people on the internet?. If its VVT then it could be the dephaser pulley...which isn't cheap...

I know, but having a mechanic say he doesn't know what's wrong with your car is stupid if you ask me..

Dephaser pulley, is it a big job? Any idea how much it'd cost us to get done?

Thanks :)

I might agree that a cam belt kit won't fix it. If it's done some mileage I think what you can hear could be the hydraulic lifters clattering about because the oil has bled out of them when the engine has been off. Until you start the engine and the oil pressure pumps them back up, it'll sound like a bucket of nuts and bolts. This is wear and tear that's caused it and I think it's unlikely that a new cam belt will rectify it. Another thing that can make the same noise is using the wrong grade of oil, because the oil can't get in and out of the lifters at the correct rate.

Renault cam belts have to be changed at 80k miles or something like 7 year intervals, whichever comes first, so it might need doing anyway.

It's done over 100K miles now so from what you've said it probably does need a new cam belt, do t remember it being changed. And as to the noose it's consistent, after two hours of driving it still sounds the same :(. And it's been serviced a few months ago and the oil got changed and it still sounded the same. Looking at the prices on the web for a new belt and phaser it's gonna be about £500.

It'll be the inlet cam dephaser, does need a new belt kit to change it and a new dephaser which are around another £200.

Can't remember if the F4R is variable VVT but does the rattle stop when you lift the revs over 2k?

Its not really a job for any old ming **** to do as they need to be aware of the floating pulley setup and how it needs to be treated, special tools are a must.
