How do,

I'm hoping to look at a Megane this weekend, can anyone with any experience give me any pointers on what to look out for on a 2007 Renault Sport Megane 225 please?

Thanks

Something else?!?

My sister has an 07 plate Megane, had a lot of electrical issues with it, IMO you can do better elsewhere!

I've got a 225. The main things I can think to look out for are:

Cambelt + aux belt history, preferably done by Renault or by someone who knows what they're doing.

Electric window regulators are known to fail so check the windows work. I've had my drivers side window done. Renault pay a massive chunk of the cost with it being such a common problem. I think it'll cost you around £120 a window to sort via Renault.

Exhaust hangers are known to fail which makes the back box/exhaust tips wobble all over the place. Make sure this is nice and secure.

The water drain holes under the wiper mechanism are known to become blocked with leaves, twigs etc which ends up leading soaking the interior carpets. Check for a damp floor as it's nightmare to dry out from what I've read (basically a full interior strip). The passenger side door pocket also can fill with water too (unrelated to the main water drain holes). I currently have this problem! :p

I can't think of much else... I'm sure I've missed some bits though. Might be worth checking out Meganesport.net or RSMegane.com for a buyers guide :)

Are they really that bad! Every time I think I've settled on something I get put off

I usually buy jap cars but they're is nothing I like other than RX8s and we all know how reliable they are

They're great cars if you can find one that's been looked after. As a daily driver they're great and have lots of usable power and torque (90% of torque from 2100rpm which comes is very handy for nipping past people). They're lovely motorway cars too with them having 6 gears. Mine sits at 2500rpm at 70mph in 6th gear so you're not surrounded by lots of unwanted engine noise (unlike my brother's S2000!). :p

Buy it and burn it wife fire...

I am not a big fan of french cars, ive had them as have family members and each and everyone has had electrical issue's, some major, some not so major but irritating I.e on my pug 307 when indicating it would sometimes flash my full beams. Had issues with diesel high pressure pumps wearing rapidly and therefore firing iron shavings throughout the fuel system which then needed replacing, countless DPF issue's which forced me to get it removed.

I assume you're looking at hot hatches? If so, considered the usual bunch? Focus ST, Golf GTI/R32, Civic Type-R, etc.?

Relentless, if you didn't like your FN2 you won't get along with a megane. If you must have one then a FL cup chassis is the one to try out.

So, you're looking for something relatively quick - say 220ish horses, decent reliability. On top of that, how about adding 4wd and a high end feel?

I'd say go try the Megane, and then have a go in a TT. ;)

Go and read this http://www.pistonheads.com/doc.asp?c=52&i=28558

We have a Clio 197 after owning jap cars (MX5's) for years and yes it has its quirks but it's not been on fire hardly at all having owned in for around 18 months now. Cambelts on these engines need doing by someone who knows their stuff as apparently its very easy to get the timing slightly out unless you use the proper Renault locking tool on the cams. Apart from that i'd expect to have some random electrical issues now and then but they tend to be more of an annoyance than the kind which leave you stranded, go in with your eyes open and they're good cars.

You hear quite a few horror stories about Megane MK2's but from my experience they've all been the 1.5 diesels as they seem horribly unreliable, not known anyone to have any issues with a 225 and i know a couple of people with them.

tbh any car you're going to look at will have a list of possible things that could be wrong or could go wrong etc, even new cars aren't perfect
drive one and see how you feel :D

All very valid points, worth looking for when buying a Megane.

Also check the service history, for the spark plugs, and most importantly the Coil packs, when they where last changed?
Megane's are know to kill them quickly (seem's circumstantial) , leaving the car on three cylinders. It would get you home, but it's never fun. :o

In the six, years I have had mine. I have serviced the engine every 12 months (Oil, Oil Filter, Spark Plugs), an within days of buying it, I bought 4 new coils to be safe.
Since that time, I have had 2 coils die, and it has never let me down mechanically (waiting for toe truck.)
As for the coils, there only £25-30 each. And five minutes to take one out, restart the car, and check them, until you find the faulty one.

Has been my first, and only car to date, and I absolutely love mine.
Comfy-ish (Depends on speed) + well kitted for a 2004 car + economical as a daily; But immensely quick for 200+BHP Front wheel drive car, and when on twisty, A roads, boy they are fun, an very responsive. :D

EDIT: Also if your buying one. Check the tires, most Megane owners recommend Continental Tires. I have Continental Contact Sport 5. I only ever had hairy moments on the snow. In the dry, or wet the car is perfectly planted. :)

Mazda 3/6 MPS?
Quite liek some of the RX8 Evolves like, odd colour paint, that and yeah their tendancy to kinda die kinda fast lol :p

My experience of an 06 70k car..

Snapped rear springs, nsf spring snapped too
Dead inner and outer track rods on both sides
On going ignition and lean misfires
Worse fuel consumption than my E36 M3
Parts are a pain, they cross reference a lot with 2.0 and dci models
A pain to work on, so many things corrode/seized
Dual mass flywheel not sounding too healthy

Timing belt job was actually quite straight forward

TC and ESP defaults to "ON" once youre over 15mph

I ran one for 2 years, my only issue was the window regulators.

I had a lux pack on it and it felt a lot better than the normal cloth seat cars.

I would buy another one, but same as all cars, you need to see that it has been loved.
