I was sc cleared about 3-4 years ago and then left the job a year later. How do I go about renewing the clearance as I've seen a lot of jobs asking for it but want you to have it before you start ?

I've also seen this but how do contractors do it as they only last a year once you're out of an sc working environment ?

Ok, the DVA issues SC clearance with a expiry date (say 2014). This means if you stay in an SC sponsored role at that point in 2014 you will need to renew it with all the forms etc.

When you leave your SC sponsored role, it will expire after one year if the new company does not apply for SC clearance on your behalf (as others have stated you cannot apply for this yourself directly it's sponsored by the government body through your contract to the company IIRC they then sponsor you).

When you reapply after it has expired, you can fill in the section in the forms about prior SC clearance which helps speed things up a little (unless you've worked or lived outside of the UK for a period).

As above, you have to be sponsored by a government dept to get it (for instance in my case it was BIS), costs approx £50 for SC level.

Contractors do it by being getting a job within a year of leaving the last thus keeping the clearance, which can then just be renewed (I believe) for the new role. So they have it when they start, and then get it renewed/updated once started.

I think that's how a contractor would do it anyway.

50 quid? Try 3k. Thats what the Assembly government get charged.

ah that sucks, I saw a good, well paid job near me that requires sc clearance but requires you to all already have it. I saw somewhere that a renewable can only take a week ?
