Hello All, I currently Have:

1 Bedroom Flat, Good Size (Larger Than Most Others I Have Seen) With Shared Garden Area (Recently Gravelled) Good Neighbours (They Talk A lot If You See Them Mind) And A Private Garage (But That Is Not Part Of The Accommodation Its Separate Rent)

This Is a lovely flat, On a quiet relatively trouble free street, To be fair I have left my car unlocked with the keys in it a few times now and its been there when I got up, I also feel very safe leaving my door unlocked if I’m asleep etc etc.

But the problem now is that I’m going to Uni in Lincoln, and Lincoln is a 40 - 45 Min Drive away or a 1h 10 Min Bus Ride Away:

Bus £52 A Month x 12 = £624, Over Three Years £1872

Car - Parking £50 A Month, Petrol £75ish A Month x 12 = £1500, Over Three Years £4500

Either way is quite expensive, Bus has drawbacks, I will be waiting long periods of time before a bus comes, and I may miss it if my lessons run to late, Thus being stranded with nowhere to sleep.... But car is way to much to run for 3 years.

So I was wondering what options I would have accommodation wise, I cannot afford a second accommodation from the Uni as this would be at least £200 a month, and I just do not have these kinds of funds.

It would be much more convenient for me to live in Lincoln, Not only would it enable me to sleep in longer than 6:00 Every day, But I would not have to worry about missing buses etc, and I would be able to nip home in-between lessons to do work on my beloved computer.

However here in lies the problem, This flat took me a long time to get, Its rented from a housing association (In conjunction with the council) Linx Homes. It is a permanent residence, and the waiting list to get new property is 4 Years Minimum, with a large list of applicants.

As this is the only place I have to live, I do not want to give it up to go into temporary accommodation, E.G renting a flat with a 6 - 12 Month Contract.

I want something that will be permanent, E.G Another housing association flat/house. But I’m not sure what I can do to get this, without giving up my current Flat, I know there are options of transfers, But I have no idea how these work, so any help, and advice you can give would be greatly appreciated!

My current rent is £250 Give or take, Which is very cheap in this day and age, But tbh, a little bit more would not matter if I’m not paying for transport every day.

I was also wondering what the lowest mortgage payment you could get would be? Working on an average cost of say 100k for a house, and If it would be possible for a student to get a mortgage, while they are living off student loans, and then planning on getting a job as soon as they leave Uni (God Willing)

North Lincolnshire College or Humberside?

You're never going to get a mortgage as a student, but if you could, you'd be looking at ~600pcm on a 100% 100K mortgage over 25yrs repayment.

My parents decided to buy me a flat because of the cost of renting in Edinburgh. We settled for a quiet part of a cheap area which is very close to uni, and they extended their own mortgage so this place is actually paid outright.
I know of students who have their own mortgage, however they did require their parents as a guaranteur.
In my opinion, it was definately worth the purchase, as rent would be £300 per month into someone elses pocket. It is also a start on the property ladder, which is getting more and more difficult to get on.

Neither.... Lincoln City University - Brayford Pool

Yea I think i'm going to use my inheritance to buy an apartment. Would be looking at a 90k mortgage I bet for manchester city centre location, but to rent it would be about £500 pcm.

Used to be called Lincolnshire and Humberside University :). Haven't been there for a few years now.

you could have a look at flat/house swaps

most councils/housing assosciations keep a list of people who want to swap, and what they want to swap for etc...

its quite a common occurence...

well...my mum did it, an shes common as muck...

When I was in Lincoln, I stayed in halls for 1 year, ~35pw, then rented a house with 3 friends, ~120pm.

Personally, I'd speculate that a graduate salary would afford you to buy or at least rent a half-decent property so I wouldn't worry about holding onto your HA property.

Take a chance, rent and live the student life for a few years, then then the $$ rolls in, get on with your life. Thats what most of us did.
