Renting a lens

My friend is getting married in Kiev in June and I'm attending the wedding.

I'd like to rent an L lens to go with my 40d so I can get some good pictures, they already have a photographer so this is just for me to get some of the wedding, and of the city. I'm thinking the Canon 24-105L might be the best all rounder but I'm pretty new still so would love any other suggestions.

I already own a 50 1.8 and a sigma 18-200 3.5 DC OS

Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8

The 24-105 won't be great for low light which usually matters in weddings, and f/4 doesn't really give much depth of field control on a crop.

I really rate the 24-105, it's my most used general purpose lens, it's what is usually attached to my camera.

Even on a crop it still covers you across a broad range of focal lengths. I'd also disagree with the above poster, f/4 still gives a pleasing shallow depth of field if you are shooting on the telephoto end.

At a wedding, the darkest part is going to be the service... if it's actually in a church. Obviously an evening with disco type affair is going to be dark, but then you've got flash for that.

Given that you've also go a fast prime with the 50mm, you are also covered for the situation of needing low light performance without flash.

EF 24-70L f/2.8 or EF-s 17-55 f/2.8IS would be the 2 I'd recommend. Decide which range suits you better. 24mm on crop might be too long if you want group photos, whereas 55mm on the 17-55 would be plenty for portrait style photos.

If I was doing the same with my 40D, I'd choose the 24-70L.

This. Assuming there is good weather you'd get some cracking shots.

Besides the OP owns the sigma 18-200 3.5 DC OS

The OS should save you 2 stops of exposure bringing you close to 2.8 levels.

Given your priorities, wedding and city I'd got with the 17-55 f2.8 is, will perform brilliantly in love light for the wedding and on a crop body gives a nice portrait length at the long end as well as being wide enough for some group shots. Then when you move out into the city the is combined with the wide angle should allow you to get some excellent shots on the go.

I'd find the 24mm end of both the L lenses far to limiting on a crop body around a city, but as always it's a personal choice.
