Just a student and need to ask a basic question. I normally pay PW so that's straight forward enough, but with PCM, am I paying on the 1st of each month, or can I choose a specific date per month?

Reason why is because semesters never start at the beginning of the month so would rather not pay for 1/2 weeks when I won't be there.

TIA

Depends when the contract starts etc. You can usually ask the agency if you can change the date you would to pay it on and work out the difference etc. So one month you would pay more and the following less so you can begin paying from the date you wish.

Although reading back your post again...Are you asking if you can only pay for the weeks you are there? I highly doubt it if you are in a contract that is paid monthly.

I'd imagine for the weeks you don't wish to pay, the landlord would prefer you to completely move out so somebody else can bring the rent in. In reality, this erratic pattern of renting probably won't be allowed.

you're not actually asking about when you pay the rent but the period your contract covers...

answer is it depends - usually with a private rental you sign a contract for a whole year though so you're going to be paying for holiday periods where you're not there regardless

with halls of residence there are set dates you rent for... often your contract will involve not having to pay outside term dates - instead you move your stuff out of the room and the university rents out the halls for conferences etc..

I will be staying for 3 months, 3 months and 3 months and the minimum stay is 2 months which is fine, but I won't be looking to move in on the 1st of each month.

I'll talk to the agent though, see if they can sort something out.

I would imagine you will have to move out after each 3 month period then.

Why do you feel they should let you keep your stuff in storage in a room they could possibly rent out for free?

It depends on if it's a designated student flat or if it's a normal accommodation place. As has been said, I can't see them allowing you to have breaks in the rental period if you're going back into it (and depending on the landlord, if he finds someone else to pick up the other 6 months or the like, they'll happily rent out to someone else for less hassle and more money)

Echoing the above, if it's owned by a company that specialises in student rentals - i.e. Unite, then you normally have a contract for i think it was 38 weeks. September to Mid-May. So you'd have somewhere to stay over the long Christmas and Easter breaks, but not the long summer breaks.

Some friends who paid to rent privately i think managed to wing some 10 month contracts, so it meant they didn't have to pay over the summer. But i think you'll struggle to find anywhere that will allow you to not pay for Christmas and Easter holidays.
