Hello chaps,

ive decided to make some sense of my photo mess on my computer.

i have a number of folders on my computer with no real naming conventions or tagging. i want to sort all my photos into folders by month. What would be the best way of going about this?

im giving picasa a go at the moment, can you reorganise in this software?

its currently sat at 42,000 photos and still scanning. :eek::confused:

The free Photo Gallery is easy to use and does a good job.

You can sort by date taken and auto-rename / move to a new folder. I try to keep all my photos as .\YYYY-MM\YYYY-MM-DD-XXX.jpg

You can also add tags which can be viewed in Windows Media Centre on a HTPC.

I haven't got a clue about Picasa but I'm about to attempt the same myself with Adobe (I think Bridge can do it). I've got ~80k files that need reorganising - not looking forwards to it!

playing with the windows one and picasa it doesnt look like its going to move them. back to the drawing board.

ended on 58k files.

I haven't used Photos Gallery for a while, most of my stuff get uploaded to and stays on Google Photos.

I don't remember how I did it, maybe rename the photos and then cut and paste.

yeah i think the cut and paste thing is the key to the moving of the files. im trying to find something that will automate this whole process.

I think lightroom is going to be the answer to be honest.

import photos, you can then choose where you want them imported too. (choose a new folder and it will add them to folders by date)

Are you able to change the source when importing, e.g. from a removable drive to a folder?

yeah, you can either choose

add to catalogue (current location)
move and add
copy and add

so i copy and import from //Homeserver/Photos/Stupid Folder Name 1

to

//Homeserver/Organised Photos/Year/Month

i chose copy to start with just incase. first 4000 seemed to go fine so will just move from now on.

i can then just do another import

//Homeserver/Photos/Stupid Folder Name 2
